MassDOT Shared Streets and Spaces Rapid Response
In response to safe mobility concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation sought input from municipalities, philanthropic organizations, and practitioners like Â鶹´«Ã½ to launch a more than $20 million dollar series of quick build grant programs.
A local foundation selected Â鶹´«Ã½ as one of three technical assistance providers to help municipalities develop and design project ideas and apply for funding via this innovative program. We have been providing free services on a wide range of grant applications, from repurposing street space for gathering and socially distanced concerts to implementing rapid bus treatments. Our designs involve readily-acquired materials that can be rapidly installed¡ªmuch like tactical urbanist designs¡ªyet consider safety for all modes and compliance with design and access guidelines. As part of the grant, the projects also include the potential to be made permanent.
Our solutions considered not only social-distancing standards applied to safe roadway geometry requirements, but also an awareness of resilient materials, efficient procurement options, and compatible designs that both respect each municipality¡¯s future plans as well as their community history.
