Mastercard Headquarters Energy Retrofit

Mastercard wanted to improve the energy efficiency of their historic four-story headquarters. They reached out to our team to help improve heating performance and reduce overall natural gas usage.

We conducted an energy audit of the existing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems as well as a thermal imaging survey and energy modeling analysis. This analysis provided the foundation for proposed renovation improvements.

Upon evaluating the building envelope, we identified issues with thermal transmittance and infiltration with the single-pane glass windows. Due to the building's historic status, replacing the glass wasn¡¯t feasible. As a solution, we recommended adding a double-pane insert behind the existing glass to improve thermal performance.

In addition, we carried out a geothermal feasibility study to explore replacing the existing heating and cooling system. Based on the study results, we designed a geothermal system with 160 boreholes and ground-source heat pumps.

In collaboration with the local utility, we determined up to $3 million in eligible incentives. Our scope of work also included chiller and boiler replacements, building automation system analysis, retro-commissioning, and skylight replacements.

When complete, the combination of the envelope renovation and geothermal system is projected to achieve significant energy savings of 60 percent compared to current usage.
