Mercer University Gateway
Founded in 1833, Mercer University is one of the country¡¯s oldest and among the five most beautiful universities in the United States (according to?The?Princeton Review). Yet the campus gateway at the interchange of Mercer University Drive and I-75 was uninspired and lacked the school¡¯s character and distinction. Â鶹´«Ã½ was asked to help transform the bland access point into a suitably inviting entrance.
We provided survey, roadway, stormwater design, parking lot reconfiguration, traffic signal design, and construction administration to enhance the drive. Drainage was a challenge, so we used a series of shallow detention ponds to decrease water runoff and improve drainage conditions.
The completed project provides an attractive new campus gateway, and enhances the aesthetics of the south side of the campus while preserving the area for future land use. We also relocated Stadium Drive through the campus as part of the project and provided access for a new hotel.
Today, when students, faculty, alumni and visitors travel down Mercer University Drive and enter the campus, they are welcomed with an attractive gateway that truly reflects the spirit and reputation of the university.
