Mouth of Monocacy Road Bridge Over CSXT in Maryland
The Mouth of Monocacy Bridge was built in 1927 and carried traffic from a road dating from the 1700s over a CSX Transportation rail track in rural Maryland. We were awarded the contract to design the replacement of the structurally deficient bridge.
We faced design, logistical, and permitting challenges because the old bridge crossed railroad tracks and served as the sole means of vehicular access to a portion of a historic park, farm, and an emergency and public access to the Potomac River, with no detour route available. Our design team created an award winning solution that used accelerated construction techniques and prefabricated elements to build a single superstructure for both the temporary and permanent bridges. A permanent truss superstructure was built and used as a detour bridge. After further construction, the entire superstructure was lifted from the detour location into the permanent location.
The community¡¯s needs were respected, the project was completed on schedule, and the total cost saving to our client for the accelerated construction techniques was more than $200,000.?
