Muldraugh Water Treatment Plant Improvements
Built in the 1940s, the Fort Knox Muldraugh Water Treatment Plant had become outdated and acquired a reputation for producing water with taste and odor problems. Seeking a solution for the aged, undersized, and deteriorated plant, our Water and Wastewater Engineering team provided options for upgrading that would, ultimately, replace and modernize nearly the entire facility.
These upgrades included mechanical, architectural, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems. A new cascade aeration system was installed, process improvements were made reducing lime scaling issues, clarifier functioning was restored, degraded piping replaced, deteriorated concrete walls and slabs repaired, and the operations building was renovated.
Project considerations included the challenge of plant design and operation, while maintaining water supply, during construction on an active U.S. Army base with high fluctuations of personnel levels. The modernized plant addresses treatment deficiencies and simplifies operation and maintenance. The result is increased resilience for the entire base by allowing Fort Knox to produce its own safe and secure water for soldiers, their families, and guests.
