ND 17 Grade Raise - Rehabilitation

Travel along ND 17 wasn¡¯t moving as it should. An adjacent wetland had saturated the road bed and weakened the base. Plus, wave action from high water levels undermined the roadway and eroded the shoulder slopes. The deteriorated roadway surface slowed the speed limit and extended timeframes for seasonal load restrictions.

To efficiently repair the road, the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) separated the engineering design into three separate projects: grade raise, roadway widening, and subcut repair. Our team took on all three, designing the roadway¡¯s grade raise and re-establishing and stabilizing the shoulders while mitigating impacts to the surrounding wetlands. Because the project bordered a waterfowl production area, USDOT Section 4(f) restrictions came into the picture. We kept the project on schedule with designs that avoided the need for temporary or permanent easements within this specialized area, avoiding a lengthy acquisition process and minimizing project costs.

Now complete, the three simultaneous projects and submittals gave NDDOT the flexibility to efficiently get traffic moving as it should along this stretch of ND 17.
