New York Proton Center

ProHealth and a consortium of four leading healthcare institutions wanted to develop the first proton center in the state of New York. At the onset of the project, we supported the client in obtaining a certificate of need in New York, and through a lengthy process, we were engaged to provide data and analyses related to the architectural, engineering, shielding, and technology design.

Now complete, the New York Proton Center is a three-story, 135,000-square-foot (12,500-square-metre) facility built on a 49,360-square-foot (4,585-square-metre) constrained urban site in uptown Manhattan. The center contains three gantries, one fixed beam, one eye chair, and one research room, all hemmed in between two existing buildings.

The design of the New York Proton Center, which utilizes a cyclotron treatment system, delivers a world-class facility and provides proton radiation oncology treatment for patients in a unique healing environment. The design promotes a sense of wellbeing and comfort for patients through the inclusion of natural materials and the combination of artificial and natural light.

With a well-organized and efficient layout, doctors and technicians can work effectively, increasing throughput and promoting better outcomes for each patient. Plus, the center serves as an anchor for a mixed-use residential, commercial, and retail project aimed to fuel urban renewal in East Harlem.
