Northwell Health Tower 8 Intensive Care Unit
The North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) intensive care unit (ICU) was outdated and consisted of shared patient rooms. To offer more single patient rooms and create Long Island¡¯s first liver transplant unit, NSUH conducted a major renovation to the vacant eighth floor of its existing nine-story tower building on campus.
Stantec¡¯s interior design and architecture teams were engaged to transform the vacant behavioral health unit into a modern ICU. One of our main challenges was to create technologically advanced patient rooms with a focus on the patient headwall design. We reduced the construction schedule by using modular headwalls and equipped each to serve two patients in times of an emergency or surge. Expanding on the user experience, we incorporated technology such as telehealth monitors into each footwall for remote specialist consultations. One of the unit¡¯s most unique features is the use of switchable privacy glazing at the patient room sliding doors and a nurse monitoring window that provides a view into the room.
We achieved the goal of the project by matching the physical constructs of the newly renovated ICU to NSUH¡¯s reputation for providing superior care. Overall, the new unit provides improved care, efficiencies, and an enhanced patient and family experience.
