Open Road Tolling on the Delaware Water Gap Bridge
When our client needed fast track improvements to the toll plaza to ease traffic backups quickly, the challenge was to increase capacity when there was virtually no space for widening the toll plaza. The site is flanked by the Delaware River and a railroad and has very steep slopes on either side. With these limited space options, we studied the site carefully, completing comprehensive surveys and traffic studies, a community outreach program, and a VISSIM traffic simulation to develop a design that could be both cost effective and quickly implemented.
The solution was an open road tolling facility, initially designed as a one lane electronic facility capable of accommodating a future conversion to two lanes. We demolished the left three lanes of the existing toll plaza to place the new facility, and dedicated the remaining lanes of the plaza for both electronic and paid tolling. This design allowed traffic to flow more smoothly and faster through the facility, resulting in significant improvements. The plaza now operates with little to no delays.
