Runway 5-23 Rehabilitation and End Safety Area Construction

Our in-house aviation design group provided airfield design, environmental impact analysis, permitting and mitigation design services, and construction phase services for the reconstruction of Runway 5-23 at the Lawrence Municipal Airport, including construction of compliant runway end safety areas.

The existing pavement was reclaimed and blended with the underlying base material to provide a new reclaimed base course, and the runway edge lighting and airfield guidance signs were replaced as a part of the project, including new electrical duct bank and cabling infrastructure. A significant component of the project was construction of new runway end safety areas for Runway 5-23. Heavy earthwork and reinforced soil slope design was required to address 40-foot drop offs at both runway ends, and additional accommodations for the end safety areas included shifting the runway towards the Runway 5 end by approximately 100 feet to minimize impacts to protected wetlands.

Our aviation staff provided full time resident inspection during all aspects of the projects over two construction seasons. Through the efforts of the entire project team, Runway 5-23 was re-opened in the fall of 2017 with a newly paved surface and fully compliant runway safety areas, enhancing the safety and comfort of the flying public.
