Sagamore Rotary Grade Separation

With only two vehicle access points serving Cape Cod over the Cape Cod Canal, the Sagamore Rotary is a critical junction for travelers crossing the Sagamore Bridge to reach this popular vacation destination, as well as for local access to the nearby schools and businesses. Increased back-ups along this high-demand rotary called for a redesign to alleviate traffic and improve safety.

MassDOT looked to our team to assist in the replacement of the Sagamore Rotary. The five-legged rotary connected Route 3, Route 6 via the Sagamore Bridge, and local roadways to the east. After extensive study, a Preferred Alternative was developed to grade separate local and regional traffic movements.?

Collaborating with another consulting firm, our team led the design of highway, bridges, drainage, and ITS elements, along with the critical traffic staging during construction. Key to the project¡¯s success was developing plans in cooperation with the local community, Chamber of Commerce, and local business owners, who were concerned about diverting bridge-bound traffic from their doors.

The result? The grade separation reduces delays, improves air quality, enhances safety, improves local access, and upgrades bicycle and pedestrian safety.?
