Sanitary Sewer Improvements at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)

The existing 18-inch sanitary sewer line at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) was experiencing repeated blockages and approaching the end of its useful life. The client, Houston Airports, determined that the airport needed a new sanitary sewer line that could accommodate future demands of the airport¡¯s growth.

The challenge? The new line had to cross two active runways and multiple active taxiways without disruption of airport operations. Furthermore, the team had to coordinate with the construction project on the adjacent taxiways WA and WB. To combat these issues, the line was installed using a combination of trenchless construction methods, including micro tunneling and pilot tube guided boring 35 feet below the surface, which minimized open cuts. Our team managed the design, safety risk assessment (SRA), contractor selection, and the construction of the project.

For the duration of this project, we worked hand in hand with the construction team, IAH Airside Operations, and the neighboring taxiway project team to ensure that our work didn¡¯t disrupt day-to-day functions of the airport¡ªkeeping it fully operational.?
