Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Rehabilitation Research Hospital - Consulting

The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is a leading specialty, science, research, and rehabilitation hospital for patients coping with stroke, spinal cord or brain injury, and other conditions. Wanting to develop a new building that would bring their services for patients under one roof, Shirley Ryan AbilityLab engaged us to help.

We provided consulting engineering services to bring specialists¡ªdoctors, nurses, scientists, engineers, and others formerly working in different facilities¡ªtogether in Innovation Centers in the new hospital building. Each Innovation Center has AbilityLabs that infuse integrated biomedical science into the clinical environment. These centers offer space for both direct and indirect patient care and include patient rooms, medical rooms, supply and nursing stations, and exam rooms.

Our team configured the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. We designed operational technology systems to enhance the quality, safety, and efficiency of the facility operations. The building automation platform brings together data from all major systems performing critical control and monitoring. We also designed a system that offers power and data flexibility for unique items such as gait tracks, which use wall sensors to monitor how far a patient walks and gauge their steadiness.

After construction was completed, Shirley Ryan AbilityLab engaged us in an 18-month project to assess the energy use of the entire hospital to increase the efficiency of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing operations¡ªhelping enhance occupant comfort and reduce costs of operations and maintenance and energy demand.

By bringing specialists together in this new hospital building, Shirley Ryan AbilityLab blends biomedical science and patient care in one place for patients seeking rehabilitation and recovery for independence and an improved quality of life.?
