Tennessee Flood Prediction and Resiliency Implementation
Weather events aren¡¯t new in Tennessee. But recent years have seen an alarming rise in their frequency and severity, leading to extreme flooding, destruction, and the tragic loss of life. After historic floods hit Waverly, Tennessee in 2021, we partnered with the Tennessee Economic and Community Development Department (TNECD) to improve their flood preparedness. Using funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development¡¯s National Disaster Resilience Competition, we integrated a new decision-support technology to strengthen their resiliency.?
Our team has shifted the entire paradigm of flood modeling in the state by integrating Flood Predictor. The tool uses machine learning flood-risk technology¡ªbased on FEMA Risk MAP data and informed by 30,000 hours of engineering models¡ªto provide high-quality flood predictions. This gave TNECD the ability to analyze regional flood risks without the need for complex hydrology and hydraulic modeling. Flood Predictor datasets were integrated into the TNPlan Web Portal, a repository of resilience and flood hazard data that helps .?
Then, we took it a step further. We integrated statewide data into Flood Predictor to enable it to help assess flood risk across the entire state. This endeavor shows how local communities can strengthen their resilience against future impacts from similar flood events. With these advanced insights, officials can better inform the public which areas are at the highest risk for impacts and identify the safest evacuation routes ahead of extreme events.
