Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Concrete Dam Anchor Design Retrofits

Our stability analyses of the Fort Loudoun, Tellico, and Watts Bar dams revealed sections of the concrete monoliths that did not meet required stability criteria. In continuing our partnership, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) then entrusted our team to help bring the dams into compliance.

For the Fort Loudoun non-overflow section, we designed full depth post-tensioned cable rock anchors as the existing structure was found unstable at the concrete rock interface. To meet the stability criteria, we designed four 27-strand anchors and six passive bar anchors to extend into the bedrock and carry the required load. At the Tellico and Watts Bar non-overflow sections, the upper neck lift joints required stabilization. We designed post-tensioned bar anchors to extend through the neck and anchor to the concrete monolith below. Altogether, the project featured 92 bar anchors at Tellico and 18 at Watts Bar.

During the fast-tracked project, our design included engineering calculations, construction drawings, specifications, quality control documents, and construction observation support services. In the end, we helped TVA bring its hydroelectric dams into compliance on time and on budget.
