U-6084 Riverbend Continuous Flow Intersection
In 2016, Corning Optical announced it would move its headquarters to Riverbend Village in Charlotte, North Carolina. A traffic impact analysis was submitted to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) recommending a continuous flow intersection (CFI) to address the area¡¯s growth.
We partnered with Simpson Commercial Real Estate, the City of Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT), and NCDOT to design North Carolina¡¯s first CFI at the intersection of NC 16 (Brookshire Boulevard) and Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road. For roadway design, we focused on designing the auxiliary through, offset left, and bypass right lanes, as well as pedestrian movements with minimal right-of-way and utility impacts. When it came to traffic engineering, we focused on transportation management, signing and delineation, signal design, and how to maintain safe pedestrian accommodations during construction and final design. We also evaluated the existing site plan¡¯s environmental permit, coordinating directly with the US Army Corps of Engineers to develop the best possible permit solution for the CFI and site.
In Fall 2020, this intersection was recognized by the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina (ACEC/NC) with The Grand Conceptor award¡ªthe top prize¡ªas part of the annual Engineering Excellence Awards.
