UNC Charlotte - Burson Building Feasibility Study

With more than 20,000 students, University of North Carolina (UNC) at Charlotte is one of the largest universities in the state. The Burson Building houses the growing chemistry and physics departments. Space is limited, hence the need for expansion and renovations. The facility also has significant HVAC limitations, mostly due to vent hoods and negative pressure in the chemistry labs. Â鶹´«Ã½ is helping UNC evaluate the potential for a renovation or addition to the Burson Building.

We are investigating the two story, 79,000 square foot building¡¯s condition and outlining a program for the existing and new chemistry laboratories, research and support spaces. We are reviewing proposed improvements and opportunities to increase capacity, estimated construction costs, phased scheduling and making recommendations on how best to proceed while keeping the building in use.

The result of the study will likely be an annexed structure that will house new faculty offices, labs, lecture halls, and common areas. The design of this annexed structure will involve architects, surveyors, landscape architects, and mechanical, electrical, structural, plumbing, and civil engineers from five Â鶹´«Ã½ offices.
