US Route 7/VT Route 9 WWII Veterans Memorial Highway
Bennington has everything that makes small New England towns bucolic. Unfortunately, it also has all the traffic headaches of being a tourist destination and a major truck route for north points. We designed a part of the solution to this traffic problem, the second segment of the Bennington Bypass. Conceived as a new road that essentially runs in a nine to six o¡¯clock configuration, our team completed the twelve to three o¡¯clock section.
In all, we designed a 3.5 mile section of a two lane highway and climbing lanes, with the ability to increase to four lanes in the future. Several innovative solutions were employed to save money and mitigate impacts in this beautiful rural setting. Our value engineering review revealed that if we changed the traditional interchange included in the original concept into a single entry and exit point diamond configuration, we would be able to save over a million dollars in construction costs. We were also able to save space because it reduced the footprint, thereby mitigating impacts to wetlands and surrounding areas. Finally, the alignment allowed us to avoid an electrical substation, resulting in more cost savings.
