Wildcat Creek Bridge Replacement
The original structure has been around since 1936, and in the years before the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) set out to replace it, crews had to replace several cracks and holes. WSDOT brought in a design-build team including Â鶹´«Ã½ and Graham Contracting to design a replacement for the 82-year-old, 150-foot bridge.
The bridge design minimized traffic, community, and environmental impacts by using a 54-foot precast arch culvert structure rather than the standard WSDOT girder bridge, which likely would have included the construction of a temporary bridge and a four- to five-month construction schedule. This project solution nearly eliminated cast-in-place concrete by utilizing precast concrete elements including foundations, retaining walls, and traffic barriers.
The new arch structure adds stability and complements local and regional aesthetics. Plus, it¡¯s environmentally friendly¡ªthe team focused on natural hydrology and habitat preservation. The short construction time minimized potential impacts to the endangered spotted owl habitat and protected salmonids by limiting the amount of in-water work necessary. Additional streambank stabilization and restoration in the project area added large wood material and additional stream substrate supportive of essential salmonid habitat. This restoration work provided a seamless and natural stream corridor at completion.
The Â鶹´«Ã½ and Graham Contracting design was implemented in just 17 days, saving the Washington State Department of Transportation $4 million.
