Commonwealth Games Transit Malls

After the Department of Transit and Major Roads completed an initial investigation of transit malls for the Commonwealth Games, we stepped in to bring the plan to life. Transit malls are significant public transport stations or interchanges that integrate with the surrounding streets. During the 2018 Commonwealth Games, these malls supported movement of the Games Family, athletes, spectators, journalists, and broadcasters. Malls located at Southport supported spectators at the Southport Venue Cluster. The Athlete¡¯s Village at Parklands provided secure transport to and from the venues for athletes and their coaches, and Broadbeach supported the Media and Broadcast Center. We also provided input to the design of the transit mall at Carrara stadium.

Our primary task was to identify land area required, refine preliminary designs, and deliver feasible designs. This included initial optioneering of the malls, developing functional requirements, modeling, and design development. Although they were temporary facilities, the malls needed to be of sufficient capacity and quality to encourage high usage of public transport. Using the competition schedule and demand projections, we calculated bus size requirements and pedestrian activity, using this to design in a way that optimized vehicle and pedestrian movement.

Our efficient, modern designs helped spectators, athletes, and media alike get to their events worry-free and on time, helping to achieve mode share targets for the Games.
