Ihi Ora Community Mental Health Centre

The Ihi Ora Community Mental Health Centre helps support Auckland’s mental health and wellbeing. Adjacent to the Auckland City Hospital, Ihi Ora’s previous, aging facility needed an upgrade, so we collaborated with Jasmax to bring the new vision to life. Once the architectural plans for the two-story, 1,500-square-metre (16,146-square-foot) space were established, Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora engaged us in the preliminary healthcare and mental health design stage.

We delivered the mechanical, electrical, piping, and fire protection building services to transform the facility into a refreshed, functional space. This reflects the Centre’s mission to create a welcoming and energy-efficient building with safe access for all. We replaced the externally mounted wet cooling tower with a closed-circuit air-cooled chiller integrated within the ground-level car park—eliminating legionella risks and extending the new chiller’s life. Switching to energy-efficient LED lighting with advanced controls and occupancy sensing reduces power consumption. Plus, anti-ligature lighting fixtures help create safe, low-stimulus spaces. For something special, we even incorporated the Matariki star cluster—known in some European traditions as the Pleiades—via micro downlights.

Designed with wellness at the forefront, Ihi Ora’s new facility is not only a peaceful, calming environment for patients but it’s a revitalised workplace for employees as well—this renewed Centre is a beacon of hope for the community.
