Tina River Hydropower Project
While remotely located in the Pacific Ocean, the Solomon Islands are not immune to climate change. In fact, they’re on the front lines, impacted by sea level rise and changing weather patterns. Seeking to play a role in mitigating climate change, the Solomon Islands are acting to reduce their dependency on diesel fuel for electrical generation. The Tina River Hydropower Project on the island of Guadalcanal will strengthen climate resilience as a reliable alternative to fossil fuels.
We’re providing owners engineering services for the project, which includes a 77 metre high roller compacted concrete dam and a 3.3-kilometre long, 3.6-metre diameter tunnel transitioning to an above ground penstock and a powerhouse which will contain three generating units, producing a total of 15 megawatts of electricity. When completed, the project will significantly boost renewable generation capacity for Guadalcanal. The project will provide additional benefits in the form of lower power prices, new job opportunities, and community benefit sharing.
The path to sustainability is a long yet vital one. Armed with expert knowledge of hydropower projects in remote locations, our team is working collaboratively with our client and the EPC contractor for a robust, resilient, and reliable project that will serve the Solomon Islands for decades to come.
