Wailoa Half Life Refurbishment
Our team has been overseeing the upgrade of Fiji’s main power station and largest hydroelectric plant. The scheme, commissioned in the early 1980s, is situated in the remote highlands of Viti Levu, two hours’ drive from the capital, Suva. Because the plant provides most of the electricity for Viti Levu, restoring its reliability and extending its operating life is key to the renewable power and security of supply to the people of Fiji—while also important to reducing the community’s reliance on fossil fuels.
The station supplies a significant proportion of the total power demand on the Island’s electricity grid, drawing water from the Monasavu reservoir, 600 vertical meters above. Drawing on our local and global hydropower plant experience, we’ve provided engineering and design advice, contract management, technical support, project coordination, site supervision and commissioning, and owner’s engineer services.
Through the participation of Energy Fiji Limited, the project has also provided an opportunity to upskill and develop the capabilities of many local people.
With this major mechanical and electricity-generating modernisation, the Wailoa hydroelectric plant will improve dependability and sustainability for those who rely on its power—today and well into the future.
