Waiwhet¨± Stormwater Model

What do you do when two of Wellington's key water governance stakeholders need accurate information about the impacts of flooding and asset performance? Build an extensive 2D stormwater hydraulic model.

The 2D model we built served two distinct purposes required by each organisation. Wellington Water needed to understand the performance of the stormwater network and provide the 1-in-100-year storm flood events for district plan requirements. Greater Wellington Regional Council wanted to know the effects of the Waiwhet¨± Stream flooding after storm events.

We undertook comprehensive and collaborative workshops to understand each client's needs and agreed on the methods for the model build, to meet both organisations¡¯ requirements and specifications. Our model was built and validated to model actual storm events, provide consistent system performance, and create flood mapping extents. Providing significant time efficiencies, automated processes were notably faster than previous model build processes, which had relied heavily on manual updates of individual assets.

The result? A model that serves both clients with their individual requirements. And the knowledge gained is being used to develop a model construction tool in the future.
