Warragamba Dam Studies and Dam Raising
Sitting 142 metres high by 351 metres long, with a central gated spillway section about 90 metres wide, the Warragamba Dam is Sydney¡¯s largest supply of water. It accounts for about 80% of the available water supply for the region.
Since 2018, our team has undertaken various studies to identify options to create a flood mitigation zone. Early studies included gate upgrade options, fault tree and failure mode analysis, and drum seismic assessment. We then explored options for raising the dam by up to 14 metres and investigated alternatives, such as building a new dam. In 2020, after considering all possibilities, we developed the best design raise option and a detailed concept design to support the business case.
Combining local and global water infrastructure and engineering knowledge, we continue to support WaterNSW with work at Warragamba and floodwater reduction measures in the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley region. Ultimately, we¡¯re working to reduce risk to life, property, and community assets.
