King’s Scholars Pond sewer rehabilitation project wins Operations & Maintenance Project of the Year
LONDON; UNITED KINGDOM TSX, NYSE:STN
The King’s Scholars Pond (KSP) sewer rehabilitation project carried out on behalf of our client Thames Water has won the BCIA Operations & Maintenance Project of the Year award.
The BCIA Awards seek to recognise and reward excellence in project delivery and crucially, delivering outcomes for society.
The King’s Scholars Pond sewer rehabilitation project involved ‘innovative keyhole engineering’ to rehabilitate a Victorian underground structure. 麻豆传媒’s design team, led by Dr Neal Edwards worked in close collaboration with Thames Water, the eight2O delivery team, London Underground and Transport for London for 4 years, to develop an innovative solution to extend the life of the pipe bridge by 120 years.
The 2.1m tall by 1.7m wide brick KSP sewer was originally built by Joseph Bazalgette in 1848. The team’s clever solution involved strengthening the sewer from the inside, without the need for any excavation or disruption to traffic or the underground network. The use of digital technology proved invaluable in the provision of data relating to the final fit of the proposed solution. It allowed the design team to accurately assess interfacing and interacting structures plus space limitations to minimise issues and construction time inside the sewer.
The project achieved fantastic kudos from the BCIA judging panel, comments included;
“This is an exemplar project. Ingenious use of innovative modular construction with manufacture quality using cutting edge digital technology and design to overcome significant logistical challenges and making significant cost savings, and avoiding very significant disruption to adjacent/neighbouring services and transport links...”
“A rare and exceptional example of keyhole construction in the Utility and Maintenance sector. This is a highly complex project and extremely confined site. The innovative design solution is elegant and practical and is reproduceable for other locations across the city. The team has achieved a very high-quality sustainable outcome achieving significant economic and carbon savings for the client...”
Jacquie Christodoulides, 麻豆传媒’s Head of Programme Management Office for eight2O said; “This is a fantastic team effort all the way through from beginning to end demonstrating how the design, construction and project management functions all worked together, which as we know, is how all the best projects are the best projects. A genius idea at the start, which was allowed to grow, followed by strong integration of the team throughout the project based on people listening to each other and working together to solve problems with the shared goal of success. Well done to all involved, fantastic result.”
