Airbus Wing Integration Centre

Looking to support the development of next-generation aircraft, Airbus needed a cutting-edge facility where engineers, researchers, and technology teams could come together. The goal was ambitious: create a highly secure, energy-efficient centre that could house both collaborative office spaces and large-scale physical testing areas for aircraft components¡ªwhile minimising environmental impact.

Working alongside Bath-based DKA Architects, we delivered a fully integrated design and engineering solution. From early concept to contractor appointment, our multidisciplinary team collaborated closely with Airbus, co-locating on site to align with end-user needs. Security, flexibility, and sustainability were central to our goals.

Our Geotechnical team led ground investigations, confirming shallow foundations would work for most of the building. Using 3D cut-and-fill modelling and in-situ testing, we developed a landscape strategy that kept nearly all material on site, reducing waste and cost. We also designed a custom wall and floor anchor system, enabling Airbus to attach full-scale wings for testing.

Structurally, we maximised efficiency with a steel frame that served both high-volume test zones and adjacent office spaces. Precast hollowcore planks were selected for thermal performance, while structural elements were dual-purposed¡ªlike gantries doubling as viewing platforms. The facade combined sleek glazing along public routes with practical cladding for testing zones.

The resulting space is a forward-thinking, sustainable facility that supports innovation in aerospace design while delivering long-term value in performance and energy use.
