Strategic Cross Boundary Cycle Development Within SEStran
Individual local authorities are responsible for delivering and maintaining cycling infrastructure within their jurisdiction. However, greater coordination between councils was required in order ensure better connectivity along routes that link population and employment centres together¡ªthat was the key aim of this study.
After reviewing and summarizing relevant cycling guidance in the UK, we completed a desktop study to gain a detailed understanding of the existing cycle network and environment for cyclists within the jurisdiction. The next step was an extensive consultation exercise. From face to face meetings to telephone interviews, we worked with over 20 key stakeholders identified by the client. Our goal? To understand the existing work being carried out at local, regional, and national levels. We also aimed to gauge where consultees thought that new routes and facilities were required or if existing facilities needed significant improvement.
A list of locations requiring more detailed investigation was produced and then a series of site audits were undertaken by bicycle. After the site audits, we developed a package of mitigation interventions with, where relevant, several possible solutions supporting different levels of investment.
The findings of the study, including the emerging list of recommendations, were presented at a workshop event which all stakeholders were invited to, and we developed a strategy document including detailed analysis of the findings from each step of the project.?
